“One of the more resilient and steady bands in Flagstaff … A solid rootsy-bluegrass outfit that plays some of the best original Americana music.”
–Northern Arizona's Mountain Living Magazine

If In This Fire’s 10 tracks are largely about contrast, the push and pull of life and absorbing what is around you, like the weight of history. It occupies a sense of the Southwestern state of mind – a cultural crossroads or borderlands at the edge of the desert in the mountains.”

'If In This Fire' Reviewed in Mountain Living Magazine

Check out the review of If In This Fire in the January/February 2015 issue of Northern Arizona's Mountain Living Magazine. Thanks so much to the staff for the kind words! Here's an excerpt:

“The current lineup … is as sturdy as it gets on the Flagstaff music scene … They also have excited local music lovers with a polished, mature record with If In This Fire. The music is rootsy, yet fresh and alive. The standout tracks include ‘Alone in the Sound’ (a tribute to Tucson’s act Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl, who passed away tragically in October 2013), ‘Hundred Miles Ahead’ and the Son Volt-esque sway and swagger of ‘There Is No Tomorrow, There Is No Today.’”

And here's the full review:

In recent months, we’ve been fortunate to see two great bluegrass albums surface from two special local bands. The first to mention here is the latest studio recording by the Voluntary String Band. Known by most locals as VSB, this four-piece folk outfit has consistency and longevity on its side. Various incarnations of the band have been around for about 15 years, and the current lineup of Matt Robinson, Ryan Heinsius, Andrew Lauher and Thom Lord is as sturdy as it gets on the Flagstaff music scene. Their constant playing at their second and fourth Tuesday sets at the Wine Loft, stomping nights at Flagstaff Brewing Company and recent ringing in of the New Year at the Orpheum Theater are a few examples of how constant and visible they are in Flagstaff.

But they also have excited local music lovers with a polished, mature record with If In This Fire. The music is rootsy, yet fresh and alive. The standout tracks include “Alone in the Sound” (a tribute to Tucson’s act Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl, who passed away tragically in October 2013), “Hundred Miles Ahead” and the Son Volt-esque sway and swagger of “There Is No Tomorrow, There Is No Today.”

We look forward to hearing more from DDSB and VSB in the years ahead. In the meantime, we have these records to spin at home between trips to the hardwood dance floor, with snap-button shirts and boots in tow.
